Spiritist Radar Logo-F2
Hello, reader --

One hundred and seventy-three years ago this month, exiled on the island of Jersey, Victor Hugo gathered his family around a small table and waited. What followed filled notebooks for two years (you will find him in this month's Time Machine). The author of Les Misérables was far from the last person to sit down with the question that table raised: what is mediumship, really?

This month's feature points to a good place to hear it answered: Dialogues on Mediumship, a series of conversations in English from the International Spiritist Council, now gathered in one place and free to watch. Two new books and a favourite Spiritist Conversations episode keep the thread going. If mediumship has been on your mind, start there.

There is plenty more on the radar besides: a vote to name a Spiritist AI (it closes September 23), a Toronto screening of the new feature film The Fox Sisters, a walking tour of Spiritualist London, three communities celebrating anniversaries, and a September in history that runs from Stainton Moses in England to the Brazilian poet Auta de Souza, whose name appeared decades after her death among the poets of Chico Xavier's first book, Parnaso de Além-Túmulo. We hope you enjoy this month's edition.

Let us know what's on your radar!

Warm regards,
Dan Assisi

ON THE RADAR

  • New Book Alert! Two new English titles from the Manoel Philomeno de Miranda Project are now available from Leal Publisher, at $15.00 each. Mediumistic Practice treats mediumship as an instrument of progress and sets out what practising it responsibly actually asks of us. Mediumistic Meetings gathers the group's research on how spirits manifest in mediumistic meetings, and on the therapies that surround them.
  • Help Name a Spiritist AI (Voting Closes September 23): Kardequinho is a new AI built by InBot with the Plenitude Spiritist Society, for conversations about everyday life in the light of reason, ethics and good sense. Its makers are asking us to choose a name that works best in English. Visit the site, talk to the bot, and cast your vote by Wednesday, September 23. The project calls it "a study tool, not an oracle," which strikes us as exactly the right ambition. kardequinho.org
  • The Fox Sisters Comes to Toronto (October 10): After its Los Angeles premiere last month, Wagner de Assis's feature film about Kate and Margaretta Fox screens at the Brazil Film Fest Toronto on Saturday, October 10. It opens in Brazilian cinemas on September 24. Festival programme | Tickets
  • A Walk Through Spiritualist London (September 27): Here is a different kind of gathering: not a lecture or a congress, but a walking tour of the city's history. "Walking Through History: Spiritism in Tour" spends Sunday, September 27 at the London sites where the Spiritualist movement made its history, following the story as Arthur Conan Doyle told it. It starts at Canary Wharf Pier and is coordinated by the Marcelo Mota Spiritist Book Club of Birmingham and the Allan Kardec Study Group of London. Participation is free. Register here, or call or text 07950 181581.
  • Fátima Gathered, and Switzerland Is Next: At the end of August the 4th International Spiritist Congress Joanna de Ângelis met in Fátima, Portugal, around the theme "Overcoming the Pains of the Soul: The Path to Mental Health." The organisers have already announced where the journey continues: the 5th Congress will take place March 26–28, 2027, in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. Worth putting in the calendar early.
  • Where Science Met Spirituality in Florida: On September 12 the Spirit Science Summit gathered Jeffrey Mishlove, Helané Wahbeh of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Alexander Moreira-Almeida and Haroldo Dutra Dias in Davenport, Florida, for a full day on consciousness, well-being and Spiritism. More than 300 people attended in person, and more online.
  • Happy Anniversary! Next month the Spiritist Society of Las Vegas turns nine, and is marking it with a series of talks running through October. They began as two separate groups that started in the same city at the same time and decided, a few years later, to join forces. In Newark, New Jersey, Spiritist Group Emmanuel celebrates four years with its third seminar, "Between Pain and Light: The Path to Hope," on October 24. And don't forget that Group Hope Joanna de Ângelis in Anaheim, California turns 40 this Saturday!
  • Revue Spirite No. 25 Arrives October 3: The next edition of the International Spiritist Council's journal, "Law of Adoration: Drawing Closer to God," launches at the National Spiritist Congress in Lisbon, Portugal, an occasion that also marks 100 years of the Portuguese Spiritist Federation (FEP). A century of continuous work is no small thing. Congratulations to FEP!

Dialogues on Mediumship

Dialogues on Mediumship: five conversations in English from the International Spiritist Council
Perhaps you have had an experience you could not explain. Perhaps you have read about mediumship in Kardec and wondered what it looks like in practice, or whether it is something you might have yourself. These are among the most common questions people bring to Spiritism, and there have been few places to hear them answered plainly, in English, by people who have spent years studying and practising it.

The International Spiritist Council has been quietly filling that gap with a series called Dialogues on Mediumship. Each session is held in English, with speakers from the United States, Canada and Ireland; some are question-and-answer sessions, others roundtables. So far the series has taken up:
All five are now gathered in one playlist, in order, and free to watch.

In short, if you have ever wanted to hear mediumship talked about plainly, by people who practise it, this is a good place to begin.

NEW RESOURCES

Read

  • Revue Spirite No. 24 — "Conscience": closing a four-part study of the Divine or Natural Law, this issue treats conscience as a law we recognise rather than invent, reading Question 621 of The Spirits' Book alongside Plato, Augustine and Kant, and setting Kardec's view against what neuroscience says today.

Watch

Let's Listen To It Again:

Spiritist Conversations: What Is This Mediumship Thing?

With two new books and a full study cycle on mediumship in this issue, it is worth going back to the basics. Dan, Suzana and Flavio talk through what mediumship actually is, and how many forms it takes.

EVENTS

Coming Up:

THE SPIRITIST TIME MACHINE

  • September 2, 1914: Albert de Rochas discarnates in Grenoble, France. An engineer and administrator of the École Polytechnique, he spent years on the experimental study of hypnosis and what he called the externalisation of sensibility, and was among the first Europeans to document regression to earlier lives under trance.
  • September 5, 1892: William Stainton Moses discarnates in Bedford, England. An Anglican clergyman and schoolmaster who came to mediumship as a sceptic, he produced the writings published as Spirit Teachings and helped found the Society for Psychical Research.
  • September 6, 1853: Victor Hugo sits at his first table-turning séance, in exile on the island of Jersey. The sessions continued for two years and filled notebooks that were not published in full until long after his death.
  • September 8, 1888: The First International Spiritist Congress opens in Barcelona, Spain, gathering delegates from across Europe and the Americas and giving the movement its first properly international meeting.
  • September 12, 1876: Auta de Souza is born in Macaíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. She died of tuberculosis at twenty-four, leaving the poems of Horto; decades later verses signed with her name appeared through the mediumship of Chico Xavier, in Parnaso de Além-Túmulo, his first book.
  • September 17, 1839: Ira Erastus Davenport is born in Buffalo, New York. With his brother William he took the spirit cabinet to audiences across the United States and Europe, and was argued about everywhere he went.
  • September 25, 1914: José Herculano Pires is born in Avaré, São Paulo. Philosopher, journalist and translator, he gave Brazilian readers much of Kardec in Portuguese and wrote some of the movement's most rigorous commentary.
  • September 27, 1813: Epes Sargent is born in Massachusetts. A poet, editor and playwright, he turned his later years to Planchette, or the Despair of Science and The Scientific Basis of Spiritualism, arguing the case in plain English.
  • September 30, 1897: Thérèse of Lisieux discarnates in Lisieux, France. Her writings on the small, hidden path of love have reached readers far beyond the Church that canonised her.
