Last month, we invited you to find a Spiritist group near you. This month, we go one step further — because for many of us, “near” is the hard part. The nearest group may be a hundred miles away, or a continent. And yet, more and more Spiritist groups now open their doors online, welcoming anyone with a connection and the desire to learn. Maybe this is the time to make new friends in a different part of the world!

That is the spirit of this edition: a new home for online Spiritist activities at SpiritistGroups.org, congresses gathering soon in Portugal and Florida, and a rich month of history — from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Clare of Assisi, whom Spiritists know by another, later name. And, of course, a trove of new resources for you to explore.

- Find (and Share) Online Spiritist Activities: SpiritistGroups.org now includes a Virtual Activities directory — a single place to find online study groups and public talks offered by Spiritist groups anywhere. If your group meets online, adding your activities is free, as always. (More in this month's feature, below.)

Distance Is No Longer a Reason to Study Alone
|
|
For every seeker who found a Spiritist group through the directory, there are others for whom the nearest center is a hundred miles away — or a continent. Yet more and more groups now open their doors online: a study circle in London, a lecture series from the United States Spiritist Federation, a Thursday meeting hosted from Los Angeles that anyone, anywhere, can join.
|
Until now, those online gatherings were as scattered as the physical ones once were. This month, SpiritistGroups.org — the directory we featured in June — adds a home for them: the Virtual Activities directory. It gathers online study groups and public talks in one searchable place, filterable by language, day, and type of activity, with each meeting time automatically shown in your own time zone. Look for the teal “Online Activities” badge as you browse the map, too: it marks the groups that also gather online.

The directory launches with its first activities already listed and will grow as groups add their own. If you help run a Spiritist group that meets online — whether you are online-only or a local center with a weekly virtual study — claiming your listing takes a few minutes, and adding your activities from your dashboard is free.

THE SPIRITIST TIME MACHINE

- July 7, 1930: Writer and Spiritualist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle discarnates in Crowborough, England. The creator of Sherlock Holmes and Honorary President of the International Spiritualist Federation believed Spiritualism to be “the most important thing in the world.”
- July 8, 1938: The British Spiritualist publication Two Worlds publishes a message from Brazilian Spiritist Cairbar Schutel — received through the English medium Mary Wood — with a fraternal greeting to his Portuguese friend Frederico Duarte: a reminder of the universality of spirit.
- July 13, 1856: English medium Florence Cook is born in London. Cook became famous for materializing the spirit Katie King, phenomena studied for years by Sir William Crookes.
- July 13, 2005: Divaldo Pereira Franco gives the first public Spiritist talk in Auckland, New Zealand.
- July 14, 1942: Manoel Philomeno de Miranda, former President of the Spiritist Federation of the State of Bahia, discarnates in Salvador, Brazil. After his passing, Miranda authored many books on the influence of spirits in our lives through the mediumship of Divaldo Franco.
- July 16, 1193: Clare of Assisi, one of the first followers of Francis of Assisi, is born in Italy. Clare founded the monastic order known today as the Poor Clares — and is recognized in the Spiritist tradition as a previous incarnation of the spirit author Joanna de Ângelis.
- July 20, 1919: Famous English medium and author Madame d'Esperance (Elizabeth d'Esperance) discarnates in Copenhagen, Denmark.
- July 30, 1952: Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding, who played a significant role in the Battle of Britain, successfully requests that the House of Lords recognize Spiritualism in the British armed services.
